Once an estimate has been signed and confirmed, the assignment is scheduled. It is helpful to compile a shot list prior to the shoot. While we are totally at ease with working on our own, it is a good idea to have a representative present, at least at the beginning of the shoot, to do a walk through of the project and discuss views and angles.
Previews are shot to a laptop computer during the process of lighting and fine-tuning the composition of each view, which gives you, the client, a good opportunity to share in the outcome of the shoot.
Client involvement is particularly relevant in a cost share situation where each party is entitled to photography that will work for their promotional purposes.
The elements of photography, including moods determined by lighting, create the substance of an image...styling goes further, luring the observer into the scene, seeking an emotional response.
Styling can be subtle or quite obvious. Either way, it serves to draw the viewer into the space itself, enables one to imagine being inside the photo. Most often, props for styling are found and used within the rooms of the project itself. In addition to using what is available on-site, it is helpful to have standard items for certain rooms. Fresh fruits and vegetables work well for styling kitchen shots. Place settings adorning the dining room tables and kitchen bars break up flat surfaces and invite the viewer to "relax... sit down". Fresh flowers and green plants literally bring life to a room. Wine, warm brie and bread set on a low table in front of a crackling fire evokes a sense of contentment and well-being in the space.
These types of props can be supplied by the client, homeowners or stylist. The details of providing props should be discussed in advance of the shoot, so that everything is available for use when the shoot begins.
Photographic fees are actually a client's cost to license the usage rights to a photographer's work. Photographers, like all artists, own the copyright to their work. Rights packages vary by the type of usage and the value that the photography brings to our client. We archive the original digital files and require that our clients order prints for portfolio and display use through us. This enables us to maintain the quality level of the reproduction of our photography.
Parties not involved in the initial buying of photography of a project may want to purchase usage rights in the aftermath of a shoot. These parties are referred to as "third parties". Third parties inquiring about photo use should be directed to the photographer to negotiate a usage fee.

Once a project is photographed, we go to work to get it published, as long as publication is approved by our client and homeowner. While property releases serve as written permission for us to pursue publication, we contact clients and homeowners each time a project is going to be published. We also furnish the editor or writer of an editorial feature with our client's contact information for interview purposes.
Editorial usage fees are obtained through negotiations between photographers and publications. Nearly all publications expect to pay usage fees to photographers for the use of their images. Editorial use constitutes third party use, as the publication is using the photography to promote their product, a magazine or book, which is sold to consumers in order to make a profit.
We work for many magazines and are always looking for interesting projects to submit to them for assignment. If you have a project that you believe merits publication, take some snapshots or slides and send them to us. We will evaluate the project and discuss publication possibilities with you.
